“I like to think about who makes up an art audience. The average person who likes to view art seeks it out and looks forward to what they will see. I like to imagine, however, that my work is being viewed by someone who is having a bad day. Their mind might be instantly removed from the art they are looking at. I think, how can I make paintings that will get them to stop and pause for a moment? I’m not saying I will make their day any better; and that’s kind of the beauty of it. The challenge is keeping it interesting and simply getting someone to pause. The rest takes care of itself.”
