A B O U T
Gala (b. 1987) is a painter living in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond district. In 2009 she acquired a BA in Photography from UCSB. She is self-taught in painting. She is currently represented by Hang Art Gallery in San Francisco’s Chinatown district.
On her recent paintings
Unpredictable, raw and punk at the core, there lies an idea of total freedom in art-making behind her work. The mix of text and image in these paintings is unusual and maybe a bit unhinged but not without thought and influence. Some of these influences include advertising, the internet, film and psychology. She believes in extremes when it comes to putting ideas on canvas. She strays away from “marketable visuals,” or the world where ideas are directly communicated in the form of a sales pitch. She believes, the less direct a message is, the more room for thought there is -it opens up a dialogue instead of a demand. Her style makes her paintings somewhat hard to predict because of this stray from typical forms of visual communication. Her brushstrokes are just as unpredictable and rather chaotic. Her subject matter often includes topics such as marginalization, poverty, fear, the underground, all with a bit of her personality mixed in. Some examples of her influences include Noam Chomsky, chumbox ads, Francis Bacon, Gaspar Noe, Howard Zinn and many many more.
